The Holy Women

This is an interesting planet. It deserves all the attention you can give it. – M. Robinson, Gilead

Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention. Be astonished.
Tell about it
. – M. Oliver, “Sometimes”

The holy women keep telling me to pay attention
to this world around me, and within me.
Poring over their words, it becomes my one desire.

But with a life so crammed it threatens the seams
and a mind drawn to dreams and distractions
the price to pay attention often feels too steep.

Then I'll smell the rain coming down,
and watch my children explore this world,
and that extravagance becomes a pittance.

Yes, there is a cost, but not a loss.
No matter the price I pay, I am enriched;
I pass along what it gives me, losing nothing.

O, holy women, may your wisdom resound,
for we will all pay attention to something.
May it be worthy of all that we will give.
